Mounjaro® Weight Loss & Diabetes Support

Q: What is Mounjaro® and how can I access it?

A: Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is a prescription medicine for adults with type 2 diabetes, obesity, or overweight with related health conditions. Unichem Medical Corner Pharmacy pharmacists can now prescribe Mounjaro® for both initial and ongoing supply for weight management. We also offer a bookable injection service - bring your own supply or let us prescribe it for you.

What is Mounjaro®?

Mounjaro® contains tirzepatide, a GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist, which works like natural hormones to:

  • Lower blood glucose levels (fasting and after meals)
  • Slow stomach emptying
  • Regulate appetite
  • Reduce food intake

Who can use Mounjaro®?

Mounjaro® is approved for adults living with:

  • Insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes
  • Obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²)
  • Overweight (BMI ≥27 kg/m² with at least one weight-related condition such as hypertension, sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease)

A New Zealand registered healthcare professional, including our prescribing pharmacists, will review your health and eligibility during your assessment.

How does Mounjaro® work?

  • Long-acting weekly injection (KwikPen)
  • Reduces blood sugar, appetite, and helps with weight loss
  • Used alongside diet, exercise, and sometimes other diabetes medicines

Dosage & Administration

  • Starting dose: 2.5 mg once weekly (after 4 weeks, may increase to 5 mg as maintenance)
  • Maintenance doses: 5 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg weekly as advised
  • Injection: Subcutaneous (abdomen or thigh) using KwikPen
  • Service options: We can prescribe and supply Mounjaro® or administer your own supply—just book online.

What should I know about using Mounjaro®?

  • Use on the same day each week (at least 3 days between doses if changing)
  • Needles not included with the KwikPen - purchase separately
  • Follow priming instructions in your KwikPen leaflet
  • Some liquid will remain in the KwikPen after the final dose (normal)
